"Thank you, baseball!"

4/17/12

Kids love mascots, right? Danny's employer, PricewaterhouseCoopers, has season tickets to the Salt Lake Bees, our AAA baseball team, and employees can sign up for games and sit in those box seats for free!

So there we were, enjoying the game, when along came the mascot. It's a cute bee, yellow and black stripes, doesn't talk, just like a bee. At first Boston was hesitant and he played along, watching the bee carefully as it waved to him from the row behind us. Then when Boston turned to look at the game, the bee leaned forward and reached out his hand for a high five. When Boston turned back around, not only was the bee now twice as large to him, it appeared to be reaching out to touch him.

He. Went. Hysterical. A surge of fear shook him, his face froze in an instant and then he leapt for my leg, my knee stifling his shrieks. The bee felt awful, I could tell, and quickly moved away to prevent additional fear.

For the next ten minutes he cuddled in Danny's lap as we tried to distract him. The lights, the players, the sound of the bat hitting a ball. When he finally let out a "Bee silly?" we knew he'd be okay. Lincoln just watched.

And then, just as we were about to leave, it happened. Our first foul ball! Hit by Mike Trout, who happens to be among the highest prospects in AAA baseball to make it to the pros this year, smacked one right into the empty seat behind us. It made a heroic thwap! against the plastic and bounced quietly into Danny's seat.

As we left the ball park with smiles on our faces, Boston sighed with a contented, "Thank you, baseball."

Super fun.

  1. Well, Hope he will say 'hello' to the silly Bee next time. That big Bee had to be scary first time.
Lucky little fellow to get the ball, and he is holding on to it!
Thank you for sharing. Love your blog.
    Hug and kiss, Grandma Gudrun
