have a little faith

We got stuck on the side of the road today. We left for a showing, the kids and the dog and I, and were driving around the neighborhoods of Centerville to kill some time. We didn't know when they'd be coming and it was just easier to get out of the house.

Lincoln didn't sleep well last night, and Boston's been cranky since he woke up. So taking a drive in a hot car without air conditioning seemed more pleasant than sitting at home trying to keep all the toys put away and the dog from bothering the heck out of me. So we drove.

And got stuck. The battery light came on, which is nothing new and goes away as one keeps driving. This time, not so. We got stuck on a little side road off Main street. Danny was on a bike ride so he couldn't help. I called Allstate and they promised to be there in 30 minutes. I suppressed the tears.

20 minutes later I had broken down. It was hot, we were sweaty, the dog was antsy, and I was running out of animal crackers to pass to Boston in the backseat. That's it, I cried to the Lord. I can't take it anymore! I don't want to get stuck on the side of the road anymore! I just want to be able to get in my car, turn on the air conditioning and go anywhere I want to without worrying about this stuff!

I got an answer in return. "You know," the Lord replied calmly, "the pioneers didn't have air conditioning and they did just fine."

He was right. I popped the umbrella stroller out of the trunk and buckled Lincoln in. As I went to open Boston's door a bug hit me in the side of the head. Cool, I thought sarcastically. It dropped onto my shirt and as Boston giggled I hung my head in shame. It was a ladybug. The Lord remembered me. I asked forgiveness and Allstate assistance arrived.

"Have a little faith," the Lord said.

That's my plan. That...and maybe finding a newer car. :)
