Life on the Road: A Halloween Night

In the cold, in the rain, in the snow, it didn't matter. Kids will do anything for candy. I don't remember how old I was, what the weather was like or what I was wearing the last time I went trick-or-treating, but as I knocked on the last few doors I do remember thinking, "I'm getting too old for this."

And then we took Boston trick-or-treating for his first time ever and all the good things about going out dressed in costume came flooding back. The thrill of seeing other people in costumes, the excitement of ringing the doorbell knowing there is a bowl full of candy to choose from waiting inside, the joy of filling up a bag with sweets. More than once I found myself wanting to say, "Oh, THAT'S why I liked trick-or-treating!"

At the first house, Boston chose a Kit Kat bar from the cauldron--and then tried to give it back. Later in the evening it seemed to occur to him that people were giving him candy because they liked him, and I say that because once that logic set in he started showing his gratitude by reaching out and giving people hugs. Yes, when someone would open the door

he'd just climb right up on the front step and reach for the friendly person with the candy. We have such kind neighbors.

Based on his frequent selection, I would guess that his favorite colors are red and yellow. When available, he chose things like Kit Kats, Skittles, Starbursts, and Butterfingers; all were packaged in one or both of those colors. Since Danny and I will be eating most of that candy this year, we were pleased. :)

As time went on and the allure started to wear off, he started to say "uh uh" and push the bowl away whenever someone would answer the door. (We're talking about free candy here!) We convinced him to keep going by handing him a box of Cherryheads to play with. We got tired before he did and called it a night after two more houses.

After scoring some sweet loot we ended the evening with a yummy dinner at Costa Vida and a trip to Graywhale to buy a fun movie.

Some people just weren't cut out for life on the road; Boston fell asleep in the car.
